Why Samajwadi Party-Congress rift has a whiff of deeper fractures
India TodayThe alliance between the Samajwadi Party and the Congress, crucial to the Opposition INDIA bloc, appears to be under strain. Bitter over seat-sharing issues in assembly elections and uneasy about the Congress’s aggressive stance against industrialists like Gautam Adani, the Akhilesh Yadav-led SP has skipped key Congress-led protests in Parliament, raising questions about their unity. The tension emerges even as TMC chief Mamata Banerjee’s call to take over the INDIA bloc’s leadership received the SP’s endorsement, further exposing rifts within the alliance. At the core of the SP’s grievances is the Congress’s alleged indifference to the party’s role outside Uttar Pradesh. Congress spokesperson Akhilesh Prasad Singh dismissed claims of a rift, attributing the seating arrangements to decisions taken by the Lok Sabha speaker rather than his party.
