Soaring demand drove up spending on power purchases in 2023-24: KSEB

The Kerala State Electricity Board spent ₹12,982.59 crore on power purchases in 2023-24, which was ₹2,418.36 crore more than the level approved by the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission for the fiscal. But the actual quantum purchased, to meet the soaring demand, was 25,585.32 mu at a cost of ₹12,982.59 crore, the KSEB said in a petition filed before the commission for truing up its accounts for the 2023-24 fiscal. Electricity consumption in Kerala rose by 11.93% in 2023-24, largely on account of poor monsoon and the sweltering summer heat, according to the KSEB. “The cumulative effect of reduced hydro inflow and increased consumption was primarily met from the power exchange markets through Day Ahead Market, Real Time Market, and Term Ahead Market contracts,” it said.
