One catch ignites Commanders’ offense, sending it where it hasn’t been in years

Wait, you’re allowed to score more than 30 points in an NFL game? Until Sunday, the Washington Commanders’ offense hadn’t scored 35 points in a game since Bill Callahan — surely, you remember the Callahan era — was playing out the string in 2019. Which brings us back to Sunday, a whole lot of crazy: rallying from a 21-3 second-quarter deficit, going on a 32-3 run — the Wizards, looking down at their shoes, were hella envious — to go up by 11 with two minutes left, then somehow almost blowing all of that lead in the ensuing 120 seconds, giving up a 50-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass on the last play of regulation from the Broncos’ Russell Wilson to Brandon Johnson. #WASvsDEN pic.twitter.com/ViybFi6BXj — NFL September 17, 2023 And, while the defense was outstanding in the second half after being strafed in the first two quarters, Washington’s offense was truly something to behold. Washington took advantage, starting on the last drive before the half, with Howell hitting tight end John Bates down the sideline for 35 yards, beating All-Pro safety Justin Simmons, who was Denver’s lone healthy and available safety by game’s end.
