Detention centre near Guwahati nears completion as PM Modi denies construction of any
India TodayA day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that there were no detention centres being made for illegal immigrants in Assam and other parts of India, India Today TV found out that construction of the biggest detention centre at Matia in Assam's Goalpora district is in process. The decision to open detention centres within the district jails was taken by the then Congress government in 2009 to avoid declared foreigners from going missing. The entire process of detention centre was carried out under the guidelines of Supreme Court and was aimed at providing basic amenities to those who were identified as foreigners in India. The central government's data states that 988 people are lodged in six detention centers in Assam and 823 of them have been declared as foreigners by the Foreigners' Tribunals.
