Mobile phone detections decline but one driver caught 41 times and fined $27,000, police say

ABC

Fewer mobile phone detection camera expiation notices are being issued in South Australia but thousands of drivers are still being caught — including a man whom police say was snapped using his phone at the wheel 41 times in three months. "The initial three-month trial saw a total of over 68,000 detections," SA Police's officer in charge of traffic services, Superintendent Shane Johnson, said. Distraction claims 30 lives Superintendent Johnson said despite the "encouraging" decline in expiation notices, many drivers continued to "ignore police enforcement and education efforts". Plans to target smart watches Superintendent Johnson said two more mobile phone detection cameras would be installed in the first half of 2025, while police would also focus on the use of smart watches while driving.
