Three deals in, Paul McDonough’s Inter Miami roster strategy comes into focus

New York Times

It is not unusual for Inter Miami sporting director Paul McDonough’s work day to include negotiating with a potential player signing, talking to a construction crew and interviewing a coaching candidate. There may be a dash of Orlando City in McDonough’s planning — certainly his experience building a team around a superstar like Kaká will come in handy — but the Latin American influence, the emphasis of signing players with sell-on potential and the hints of big-money transfer fees all are heavy on Atlanta influence. “He has a good World Cup and he’s available and you jump.” Perhaps most critically, all three of Inter Miami’s signings hold EU passports, which significantly increases their value in that English clubs can come calling without concern for whether the player will be approved for a work permit. “The comparison with Miguel is unfair for anyone because I think Miguel is, I don’t want to say once-in-a-lifetime, but they don’t come around often,” McDonough said.
