NT government to demolish and rebuild defective Bellamack houses plagued with issues
ABCThe Northern Territory government will step in to demolish and rebuild a group of defective and problem-riddled affordable houses. Key points: Nine of the homes will be demolished and three rebuilt An engineering report previously found they may not withstand a cyclone The builder and developer have denied responsibility for the problems But residents in eight other homes constructed by the same builder will remain in their houses for now — despite the government admitting they are potentially unsafe. When Infrastructure Minister Eva Lawler visited one of the homes on Friday last week, part of its balcony had collapsed and some of the flooring was rusting and disintegrating "This isn't good enough," she said. Three homes to be rebuilt, more razed The government has not publicly released its assessment report so the severity of the issues isn't clear, but the minister said the structures "couldn't continue" in their current state. Beginning today, the demolition will see nine homes covered under a government insurance scheme called the Home Building Certification Fund razed.
