MLB Contract Extension Week Tiers: Who should stay and who should test free agency
New York TimesWe’ve reached the end of Extension Week, where I’ve projected possible contract extensions for close to 50 major-league players. Josh Hader Ian Happ, Cubs: 6 years, $100 million It’s rarely a bad idea to sign a long-term extension after your best season, especially when you’ve experienced the undulations Happ has. Adolis García, Rangers: 5 years, $45 million This only buys out one year of free agency, but for García, it’s his age-34 season. Corbin Burnes, Brewers: 7 years, $185 million Max Fried, Braves: 6 years, $144 million We haven’t seen an elite starter in his prime hit free agency since Gerrit Cole, and in the time since several older pitchers — Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander and Jacob deGrom — have pushed the average annual value for great pitchers forward. Tim Anderson, White Sox: 6 years, $125 million Anderson is coming off a season in which he played fewer than half of Chicago’s games; a healthy season would raise his value.
