Jaguar's £60,000 electric I-Pace is named 2019 UK Car of the Year

On the charge: UK road testers clubbed together to decide that the Jaguar I-Pace electric SUV should be the 2019 Car of the Year John Challen, director of the UK Car of the Year Awards, said the I-Pace was a worthy winner of the 2019 gong, as it was at the head of the contenders for practical, usable and great looking electric vehicles. Rawdon Glover, Jaguar Land Rover MD, collecting the 209 Car of the Year gong for the I-Pace Judges rated it for its ground-breaking design and tech as well as rapid charging More importantly for potential customers, it's also has a claimed range of up to 292 miles on a single charge - though real-world tests show it's closer to 253 miles - and can be charged to 80 per cent battery capacity in 40 minutes from a 100kW DC charger. The I-Pace, which is priced from £60,995 - once you factor in the £3,500 plug-in car grant subsidy for pure electric vehicles The I-Pace managed to hold off some stuff competition, including the £250k Rolls-Royce Cullinan The Bentley Continental GT, which costs from £160,000, was voted best coupe by road testers Other notable mentions went to the Alpine A110, voted the best performance car, and the Suzuki Jimny, which won best 4x4 Judges revealed that the I-Pace only just took the prize by the skin of its charging cable, pipping contenders including Alpine's A110 sports car, the Volvo XC40 SUV and Suzuki's cheery Jimny 4X4.
