Barefoot trek on a raw road to education

The Hindu

Every day, eight-year-old Gemeli Meghana, a Class III student from Korrapadu village, must make a perilous trek for nearly 3 km from her village through a thick forest infested with poisonous snakes to reach school. Ex-ward member and village elder Gemmili Krishna says, “The parents take turns accompanying the children to the graveyard point and pick them up from there after school. Children from four villages study here, but nearly 20 students from Kidagari of G. Madugula mandal must trek 3 km through forest and hilly slopes to reach the school. Meanwhile, 24 children from Chintalawada, Dabbagandi, and Kondapalli study in another primary school run by the Tribal Welfare Department at J. Rallagadda village, 18 km from Chintapalli mandal headquarters. “We laid a kutcha road two years ago by pooling ₹2 lakh from the villagers so our children can reach school safely.
