Soaring campus costs force freshers to live at home with parents

The Telegraph

A third of freshers are considering shunning student housing to live with their parents, a survey has found. A survey of 11,000 young people in England who sat A-level exams and other qualifications this summer found that 20 per cent plan to live at home if they get into university. Durham University is planning rent rises of 10.3 per cent across its college accommodation, which means students will pay £9,156 for a 39-week contract for catered colleges. Almost a fifth, or 19 per cent, of young people with parents in managerial or professional occupations who did not want to go to university said affordability was a reason, while 27 per cent of teenagers from working-class backgrounds blamed the cost of living. The survey found that 57 per cent of teenagers from working-class backgrounds had applied or intended to apply for university, compared to 77 per cent from middle-class families.
