HTN’s Tiranga TV news channel set to lay off staff

The Hindu

HTN’s Tiranga TV news channel has significantly curtailed operations and is set to lay off most of its 200 employees with only a month’s notice and salary, according to staff at the 6-month-old channel, who spoke on condition of anonymity. They are demanding that Congress MP Kapil Sibal, whose wife Pramila Sibal is the main backer of the company, comes to meet them and increases the severance package to at least three month’s salary. “Dear Kapil Sibal, we the employees of News HTN are aghast that the channel is shutting down and you are offering us only one month of severance pay,” the sacked employees said in a statement. “This is to inform you that from now on we will be sitting here in the newsroom until you meet us and enhance the severance pay to three months.” Television journalist Barkha Dutt, who had worked with the channel, in a series of tweets lashed out at Mr. Sibal and his wife by referring to an “appalling” turn of events.
