Safety concerns after string of light plane crashes
Rachel Mealy : Taking to the skies in a small plane is a thrill that many Australians experience every year, but it can come with large risk. Tyrone Dalton: There are two main bodies for pilots in Australia, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for general and commercial aviators and Recreational Aviation Australia for hobby flyers. Tyrone Dalton: Pilot Keith Link from Cohuna in northern Victoria walked away from his own commercially built light plane crash in 2020 when the engine on his Piper plane failed mid-flight. Tyrone Dalton: He wants the Australian aviation industry to take another look at what constitutes safe flying and increase the safety and mechanical standards for recreational aircraft. Tyrone Dalton: He thinks that recreational aircraft should have similar rules to general aviation, where a licensed aircraft mechanic is continuously scheduling in maintenance.
