Nearly half a million teenagers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are getting grades based on mock exams, homework and coursework. Ofqual said the changes were introduced “to keep pace with universities’ and employers’ demands.” The majority of students in Northern Ireland and Wales are still graded using an alphabetical system. Overall, 28.9 per cent of UK GCSE entries were awarded one of the top grades this year, up by 2.7 percentage points on last year when 26.2 per cent achieved the top grades, figures for England, Wales and Northern Ireland show.
