Education Minister orders probe into alleged ragging-related death in Kerala
The HinduGeneral Education Minister V. Sivankutty has ordered the Director of General Education to probe the alleged suicide by a 14-year-old boy on January 15, which his family has since attributed to ragging at his school in Kochi. The Kochi City police had earlier launched an inquiry after the boy’s mother petitioned the Chief Minister and the State Police Chief alleging that ragging at the school had led her son to take the extreme step. In her petition, the boy’s mother said she had informed the school Principal about the alleged brutal ragging, providing evidence that the family had gathered. The petitioner said that according to information received from the victim’s friends and through social media messages, he was allegedly bullied by some students on the school premises and aboard the school bus. The school cannot act on the basis of presumptions, surmises, and social media posts unless we receive evidence of any specific incident or act as it could potentially affect the mental health of students,” the statement said.
