Missile kills 2 on Polish territory; Biden says ‘unlikely’ it was fired from Russia
LA TimesRussia struck targets across Ukraine, causing widespread blackouts, and missiles suspected to be Russian-made crossed into NATO member Poland, killing two. Poland said Wednesday that it was a Russian-made missile that fell in the country’s east, killing two people, though President Biden said it was “unlikely” it was fired from Russia. Three U.S. officials said preliminary assessments suggested the missile was fired by Ukrainian forces at an incoming Russian one amid the crushing salvo against Ukraine’s electrical infrastructure Tuesday. The missile strikes plunged much of Ukraine into darkness and drew defiance from Zelensky, who shook his fist and declared: “We will survive everything.” In his nightly address, the Ukrainian leader said the strike in Poland offered proof that “terror is not limited by our state borders.” Russia fired more than 90 missiles and more than 10 attack drones at Ukraine on Tuesday, Ukraine’s General Staff said in its Wednesday morning update. Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko said the attack was “the most massive” bombardment of power facilities in the nearly 9-month-old Russian invasion, striking power generation and transmission systems.
