The 'Frankenphone' made the Pixel 3's Portrait Mode incredible

India Today

Two months ago, Google debuted the Pixel 3 series of smartphones with an advanced set of front and rear cameras. The PDAF pixels on the camera's image sensor makes it possible for Google's algorithms to capture as much data as possible and compute them to create a blurring effect that's as close to the one from an actual DSLR camera. The Pixel 3's portrait mode uses defocus cue, which relies on the fact that objects behind the focused object appear to be slightly less sharp. The custom rig, known as the Frankenphone, comprised of five Pixel 3 smartphones held together on a rig with their rear cameras held at slightly different angles. Combining it with Visual Core chip on the Pixel 3 means that even with a single camera sensor, the Pixel 3 can achieve DSLR-like image quality, relying completely on the powers of the neural network and machine learning.
