Girls Will Be Girls Review: Uncomfortably accurate coming-of-age film
India TodayWhen you think of coming-of-age stories, they often evoke the first feelings of love, tender yet strong, and that spirit of fighting the world to protect that love. As a woman, I often felt claustrophobic during the sequences, only to realise how beautifully the film captured women's sexuality being stifled under the massive burden of patriarchal expectations. Her eyes glint with excitement when a boy shows interest in her life and Kasruti brings Anila's character alive in a way that is both a treat to watch, but melancholic at the same time. For me, Girls Will Be Girls was almost uncomfortable, but one of the most-beautiful and one of the best and most accurately made coming-of-age films of recent times. Girls Will Be Girls has been produced by Pushing Buttons Films' Richa Chadha, Dolce Vita Films' Claire Chassagne, Crawling Angel Films' Sanjay Gulati and the director herself, with Ali Fazal serving as the executive producer.
