Homeless eviction by Glenorchy council lashed by Hobart Showgrounds boss

ABC

A group of homeless people in Hobart's northern suburbs have been forced off their campsite, with the Friday afternoon crackdown attacked by the man who has now taken the people in at the facility he manages. Eight people set up camp at the former Berriedale Caravan Park two months ago, with Glenorchy City Council warning on Tuesday they would need to find another place to stay. This afternoon, the four remaining campers at the Berriedale site were visited by Glenorchy City Council officers, accompanied by two police officers, issued with an eviction notice and told they must vacate "immediately". A Glenorchy City Council letter, addressed to "the occupiers", said the council "has not granted you approval to use or occupy the property for camping purposes". "It looks like at this stage we've been able to find accommodation for four of the eight people, and two others we're talking to about another option," he said.
