Gammons: Now the elder statesman, Evan Longoria remains driven, and is driving the surprising Giants forward

New York Times

The first time I saw Evan Longoria was the summer of 2005, in Chatham, Ma. “In Derek Jeter’s last season, I asked him, ‘how did you know it’s time?’” Longoria recalls. I still am as comfortable every day as I ever was.” Giants President Farhan Zaidi talks of Longoria’s “inner karma.” Zaidi praises “the value of consistency,” cites part of the Giants’ makeup is that “we have these players,” and cites their understated and modest playing style. I think ‘get the best swing every time you swing.’” At 35, he knows “the season is long, and I can’t expect to feel great every day. Some time in the future, Evan Longoria will feel the way Jeter felt at the end of his career and prefer driving Elle and Nash to school in Scottsdale over getting up every day intent on fulfilling the promise he makes to himself, “to do my best every day.” And when he walks away, he’ll drag the bat behind him on a walk well taken.
