British MPs vote against early election after EU approves latest Brexit delay

Key points: MPs are to vote on a Government motion proposing an early election for December 12 The UK hasn't been asked to vote in December for over a century Presently the Johnson Government does not have a functional parliamentary majority Requiring a "super majority" two-thirds of Parliament, or 434 votes, to be successful, just 299 MPs backed the motion. Earlier today, European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted that the EU's 27 other countries would accept "the UK's request for a Brexit flextension until 31 January, 2020". Responding to Mr Tusk in a letter, Mr Johnson said that under UK law "I have no discretion … to do anything other than confirm the UK's formal agreement to this extension". Kirsty Blackman of the Scottish National Party said her party favoured a slightly earlier December 9 vote, saying: "We will not be dancing to Boris Johnson's tune on this."
