NT coroner hears Zachary Rolfe attended domestic violence call-outs before woman's murder in Alice Springs

ABC

Body-worn-camera footage of former NT Police constable Zachary Rolfe has been shown to the coronial inquest into the death of a high-profile anti-violence campaigner, with his interactions criticised as "inappropriate" at times. Key points: Kumarn Rubuntja was murdered by her partner Malcolm Abbott in the Alice Springs Hospital car park in January 2021 Abbott pleaded guilty to murder in 2022 and has been sentenced to life in prison An inquest into her death heard former NT Police constable Zachary Rolfe responded to two earlier DV reports she made WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that this article contains the names of Indigenous people who have died, used with the permission of their families. NT Police Superintendent Kirsten Engels, who conducted a review of Ms Rubuntja's case, denied "singling out" Mr Rolfe in her report for the coroner, when she made criticisms of the then-constable's interactions with Ms Rubuntja and Abbott in November 2019, two days before the shooting in Yuendumu. The court heard the person who received the triple-0 call failed to pass on to responding police that Ms Rubuntja said Abbott had tried to hit her and accused her of "lying" during the emergency call — a comment Superintendent Engels also said was "inappropriate". The coroner also heard another police officer had earlier put an "alert" on Ms Rubuntja's police profile which said she "may make false complaints".
