Ex-congressman from Fresno expected to take plea deal in federal fraud case
LA TimesFormer U.S. Rep. T.J. Cox, a Fresno Democrat, is expected to take a plea deal in a sweeping federal case involving charges of fraud and money laundering, his attorney said. T.J. Cox, a former Democratic congressman from Fresno, is finalizing a plea deal in a sweeping federal case in which he is accused of campaign contribution fraud and stealing from his own companies, his attorney said Friday. “I wouldn’t be in this position today but for the politics, and I think we all know that.” Cox’s alleged crimes, according to the federal complaint, involved three businesses: an almond-processing company that he partially owned; a sports nonprofit, for which he was a co-director, that operated an ice skating and hockey rink in Fresno; and a Fresno-based business he partially owned that helped other companies get loans and federal tax credits for development in disadvantaged areas. The indictment accuses Cox of opening an unauthorized bank account using the company’s name “without the knowledge of the other owners” or its accountants, tax preparers or auditors.
