How can I protect myself from meningococcal disease?
There have been four cases of meningococcal disease in Tasmania in the past two weeks, leaving many people wondering what protective measures they can take for themselves and their families. "The likelihood of it spreading short distances through the air or through more intimate contact is the main way in which it spreads," Dr Veitch said. "It can live within the lining of the throat and nose of people without them being aware that it's there," Dr Veitch said. "This is typically because we're in closer, prolonged contact when it's cold and there's more also respiratory complaints around," she said. Smoking can increase the risk of catching the bacteria and becoming ill. "Cigarette smoking and exposure to cigarette smoke may increase the risk of people carrying or even slightly increase the risk of infection," Dr Veitch said.
