Michel Barnier to tax private jets as France faces budget abyss
The TelegraphMichel Barnier, the French prime minister, will tax private jets in a bid to reduce France’s ballooning deficit. The plan is one of several tax-the-rich schemes unveiled in Mr Barnier’s austerity budget on Thursday, which aims to find €60 billion in savings for the 2025 fiscal year by tightening public spending, slashing jobs, and taxing the country’s wealthiest households and businesses. As part of the plan, the “solidarity tax” first introduced in 2006 and added to all commercial airfares, will also be applied to private jet travel which, up to now, has been exempt. Though official figures have yet to be released, Les Echos reports that business-class ticket holders travelling on long-haul flights of more than 3,100 miles could see their solidarity tax triple from €60 to €200.
