Exclusive: Gyanvapi mosque panel seeks intervention in pleas against 1991 Act

The committee managing the Gyanvapi Mosque has moved the Supreme Court seeking intervention in pleas challenging the validity of the Places of Worship Act, 1991. The Committee of Management Anjuman Intezamia Masjid, Varanasi, filed an intervention application in the court, stating that the mosque has been made the subject of multiple suits and the committee is therefore a crucial stakeholder in the petitions challenging the Places of Worship Act. The committee claimed that the pleas challenging the Act were "rhetorical" and said that the actions of ancient rulers cannot be addressed by the Supreme Court, nor is it a valid ground for challenging the constitutional validity of the Places of Worship Act. In February this year, a Varanasi court allowed Hindu devotees to worship inside the sealed basement of Gyanvapi mosque.
