Riverland flooding: Community remembers one of SA's worst natural disasters

Six decades after one of South Australia's worst natural disasters, people in the Riverland are reflecting on when they almost lost their towns to flooding. "We were hearing about the floods up in New South Wales and all this water coming down into Victoria and we realised things were going to be pretty desperate," she said. Much has changed for Murray in 60 years University of Adelaide Associate Professor Seth Westra said the 1956 flood was rare for such an extensive river system and it had changed dramatically in the six decades since. "When it comes to the Murray system, it's not a single storm event or a single cyclone that causes the flood a period of sustained rain over six months, or 12 months even, that soaks into soils and causes run-off which eventually leads to the flooding effects."
