Senior doctors intervene in junior medic strikes as union softens on 35pc pay demand
The TelegraphMedical leaders have intervened in the junior doctor pay row and called for mediators to broker talks to end the strikes. It came as the British Medical Association appeared to soften its pay demands and Steve Barclay, the Health Secretary, said discussions could not take place unless they removed their demand for a 35 per cent salary increase. The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges urged both parties to “rapidly engage” with independent negotiators to break the deadlock “for the sake of patients and the wider NHS". "All colleges are keenly aware of the concerns and frustration of doctors throughout the NHS and the intense workload pressures they, along with other NHS professionals, are facing as a result of workforce shortages and as a legacy of the Covid-19 pandemic," the medical chiefs said. "To this end both parties need to rapidly engage with an independent organisation to work out how the deadlock can be broken for the sake of patients and the wider NHS."
