Tony Burke says Peter Dutton 'conned' by caravan hoax and unfit for national security role

ABC

Peter Dutton has been accused by Labor of playing into the hands of organised criminals by amplifying the threat posed by what police are calling a "fabricated terrorism plot" involving an explosives-laden caravan found in January. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke on Monday slammed the opposition leader for making "reckless" statements about the plot, which included that it would have "been the most catastrophic terrorist attack in our country's history". Australian Federal Police said on Monday that investigators came "almost immediately" to the view that the caravan discovered on Sydney's outskirts was "essentially a criminal con job". But Mr Burke said Mr Dutton had not sought a briefing on the blast despite citing "police advice" when he suggested it would have been "the most catastrophic terrorist attack in our country's history". Tony Burke said Peter Dutton was "conned" and demonstrated he was not fit to hold national security responsibilities.
