The kaamdar versus naamdar binary narrative worked perfectly, especially as Gandhi did little to repudiate the popular view that he had the Congress’s reins only because he was Sonia and Rajiv Gandhi’s son. Moreover, while the Opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance is dominated by family-centric parties, can the Bharatiya Janata Party still claim to be entirely above nepotism in public life? But after almost a decade in office, the Modi government’s strategy can’t revolve around exposing Opposition frailties alone.
