The vehicle involved was a robotaxi owned by WaYmo, the autonomous driving unit of Google’s parent company Alphabet. “The cyclist was occluded by the truck and quickly followed behind it, crossing into the Waymo vehicle’s path,” the spokesperson said. Waymo and GM’s autonomous unit Cruise are planning to expand their services to other cities, including Austin, Los Angeles, Miami and New York City, though there has been some pushback to their rollout. Most incidents were minor crashes that resulted in no injuries, however a Waymo autonomous vehicle struck and killed a small dog last May in an accident that the company described as unavoidable.
