Why are Darwin's beaches dotted with asbestos and what's being done to get rid of it?

You know how it is: You're strolling along a pristine beach, collecting shells and sea glass and asbestos. The Cancer Council wants to see asbestos like this a thing of the past throughout Australia "There was a big military dump just behind the pool and effectively they dumped everything over the cliff face and it just dropped to the bottom," Mr Bridgman said. "There were literally hundreds of houses that were damaged and destroyed and most of them were built with fibro asbestos sheeting as their external cladding," Mr Bridgman said. "The type you would find on the beaches is what you'd refer to as a non-friable bonded asbestos," said John Harrison, from the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics. "Eventually we have to get rid of it but it's going to be a long-term project and there's going to be a huge cost associated with it," Mr Bridgman said.
