The furore over the NT chief minister's share portfolio begs the question, should NT politicians own shares?
ABCIs it a conflict of interest for a politician to own shares? That's the question confronting NT Chief Minister Natasha Fyles this week, after it was revealed she owned shares in gas company Woodside. Independent senator David Pocock went further, calling for the federal senate inquiry into the development of a Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct in Darwin — of which the federal government is taking a $1.5 billion stake — to also scrutinise the chief's shareholding. In addition to Ms Fyles's shareholding, opposition's shadow mining minister Steve Edgington has disclosed he owns shares in Santos and Origin. The opposition's mining and industry spokesman Steve Edgington says he will sell his stake in Origin and Santos if the CLP wins government next year.
