Drone maps reveal scale of sand swallowed in cyclone

ABC

Dunes are often the first line of defence when powerful storms — like the one Cyclone Alfred delivered — batter our coastline. While it could take years for the dunes to recover, the Gold Coast's council has committed to having the beach back in shape by the Easter holidays. A study looking at a similar coastal erosion event on the south coast of NSW in the 70s found it took the dunes six years to regain the lost sand. "Dunes are not just a pile of sand, they're actually complex systems where vegetation is interacting with sand, with currents and with waves," Dr Leon said. So when the worst predictions from Cyclone Alfred failed to eventuate, locals like Byron Shire Mayor Sarah Ndiaye couldn't help but feel like they'd "dodged a bullet".
