Researchers have long believed that the Red Planet once hosted vast water lakes just like Earth, which is the centre of research for Curiosity and Perseverance rovers trundling on the surface today, looking for signs of ancient microbial life. The study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences sheds light on the size requirements of rocky planets to retain enough water to enable habitability and plate tectonics, with a mass exceeding that of Mars.
