3-member SIT for fresh probe into Ishrat case

The Gujarat government has issued a notification constituting a three-member Special Investigation Team for a fresh probe into the Ishrat Jahan alleged fake encounter case. The State government through an affidavit informed the Gujarat High Court on Monday that it had complied with its orders and issued the necessary notification for formally constituting the SIT. Following the State government's submission, the High Court disposed of a contempt of court petition filed by Gopinath Pillai, father of Pranesh Pillai alias Javed Sheikh, who was among the four killed in the Ishrat Jahan encounter on the outskirts of Ahmedabad in June, 2004. The SIT earlier constituted by the High Court would be headed by Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police Karnail Singh and include two senior IPS officers of the State cadre, Mohan Jha and Satish Verma. The High Court in September ordered the constitution of the SIT to be headed by Mr. Singh, and directed the State government to issue necessary notification within two weeks to formally constitute it, with specific direction that it should submit its report to the High Court within three months.
