Why there’s surge in deadly attacks in Balochistan

While the Balochistan Liberation Army is the most well-known Baloch separatist group, there are other Baloch separatist groups also like Lashkar-e-Balochistan and the Balochistan Liberation Front. In June 2020, the BLA also took responsibility for attacks on the Pakistan Stock Exchange, calling it an attack against “Chinese exploitative plans in Balochistan. In August 2023, a convoy of vehicles carrying Chinese engineers working on the Beijing-financed Gwadar Port in Pakistan was attacked by the militants of the Balochistan Liberation Army. It may be recalled that on 18 January this year, Pakistan conducted retaliatory missile attacks in Iran, asserting that it had targeted militants of the Balochistan Liberation Army and the Balochistan Liberation Front in the south eastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchistan.
