Fraudster Patricia Evans 'preyed on' elderly victims in 'shocking' scheme of theft and deception, court told

A "devious" fraudster swindled millions of dollars from the savings and super accounts of "vulnerable" elderly people, but has not revealed what she did with all of the money, a court has heard. Prosecutor Peter Salu told South Australia's District Court that Evans was a "con artist" who stole $4.2 million over nine years, earning "more than a judge of this court for many of those years" and having a "profound" and "simply horrible" impact on her victims. The court heard Evans endeared herself to elderly people, "preying" on them and gaining their trust, before creating problems for the victims and then seeking cash to fix them. 'Shocking behaviour and shocking offending' Evans's defence lawyer Brad McLeod told the court his client had apologised for only pleading guilty just prior to trial, and had a "great deal of regret" and was "genuinely remorseful". But Judge Michael Durrant said Evans's behaviour was "shocking" and had caused "enormous" harm to her victims.
