A ‘no-deal Brexit’ is a no-go, says Parliament, sending Theresa May back to Brussels
LA TimesBritain’s Prime Minister Theresa May speaks to members of the House of Commons in London on Thursday in this screen grab. A spokesman for European Council President Donald Tusk said on Tuesday that the withdrawal agreement was “not open for renegotiation.” The deal painstakingly negotiated between the EU and May “is and remains the best and only way to ensure an orderly withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union,” Tusk’s spokesman said. May said she would seek “alternative arrangements” to keep the Irish border open and free Britain from a restrictive European customs regimen. “We are still no nearer any detail on what the phrase ‘alternative arrangements’ mean, except that the prime minister said that they were ‘arrangements’ that were ‘alternative.’” Northern Irish politician Sylvia Herman agreed. “The prime minister is trying to encourage this house to vote for an amendment which uses the words ‘alternative arrangements’ to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland,” she said.
