Mirtle: A deep dive search for the best new backup goalie for the Maple Leafs

New York Times

So, as you may have heard, the Maple Leafs have a goaltending problem. And the Leafs need a quality backup next season anyway, so getting someone with a little term shouldn’t be a deal breaker. It’s worth asking if it makes sense for the Leafs to invest that much in getting a backup, given they may only play that goalie 10 to 12 times the rest of the season. If Andersen plays every game save for back-to-backs, he’ll end up starting 68 games, which would be a career high and one of the heaviest workloads in recent league history. Getting a better backup as quickly as possible makes sense, as it’ll make it easier for the Leafs to both qualify for the playoffs and get Andersen some rest while doing so.
