Grape growers in Australia's largest wine region plead for change at senate inquiry

ABC

Growers in Australia's largest wine grape growing region have made an emotional plea for the establishment of a mandatory code of conduct and warned that many will not make it to the 2026 vintage otherwise. Calls for the voluntary code to become mandatory follow an increasing number of producers leaving the industry after four years of wine prices sitting hundreds of dollars below the cost of production per tonne. Second-generation Barmera grape grower Jason Perrin has long been in favour of a mandatory code to level the playing field between wine companies and producers. Chief supply chain officer Joe Russo told the inquiry that Accolade did not support "proposals to make the code mandatory" due to the complexities and resources associated with such a move.
