Akali Dal accepts Sukhbir Badal’s resignation; ‘course correction’ on cards for party’s political comeback

The working committee of the Shiromani Akali Dal on Friday accepted the resignation of Sukhbir Singh Badal from the post of party president, a move that is seen as a course correction aimed at reviving the century-old party, which has been struggling to make a political comeback in Punjab. Senior party leader Daljit Singh Cheema said the party’s working committee has accepted Mr. Badal’s resignation, and it was also decided that the election to the president of the party would be held on March 1. In November last year, Mr. Badal tendered his resignation from the president’s post after he was declared ‘tankhaiya’ or guilty of religious misconduct by Akal Takht – the highest Sikh temporal seat. Last month, the Akal Takht had directed the working committee of the SAD to accept Mr. Badal’s resignation and constitute a committee for reorganisation of the party.
