Ruling junta surrenders Kokang region in Myanmar's north-east to Three Brotherhood Alliance

Myanmar's military government has ceded control of the capital of the self-administered Kokang region in the country's north-east, the most significant defeat for the junta since an alliance of three ethnic-based rebel armies launched an offensive on October 27. The Three Brotherhood Alliance comprises the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army — the military force of the ethnic-Chinese Kokang minority which spearheaded the operation in the Kokang region — along with the Ta'ang National Liberation Army and the Arakan Army. The Three Brotherhood Alliance said 2,389 military personnel — including six brigadier generals — and their family members had surrendered by Friday and that all were evacuated to safety.
