Protesting Mysuru farmers taken into preventive custody, released
The HinduFarmers in Mysuru were taken into preventive custody on Monday when they tried to burn the effigies of Prime Minister and the Union Agriculture Minister, here in protest, against what they called “negligence” towards addressing the issues raised by Punjab farmer leader Jagit Singh Dallewal, who is on a hunger strike on Delhi border where farmers are on a protest in support of their demands. When farmers led by State Sugarcane Growers’ Association president Kurubur Shanthakumar sought to know the reason for taking away the effigies when they were peacefully staging the protest, the police took farmers into preventive custody at the Gun House Circle. Addressing the protestors, Mr. Shanthakumar said the farmers in Mysuru were stopped from burning the effigies though it was not the case in other districts where farmers staged the protest on the same issue and burnt the effigies. When Mr. Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he had recommended for Minimum Support Price guarantee for farmers’ produce and gave a report in 2011.
