J&K panchayat elections postponed after political parties demand release of detained leaders
India TodayThe upcoming panchayat election in Jammu and Kashmir have been deferred after opposition parties People's Democratic Party and National Conference told election officials that there can only be a level playing field when leaders are released from detention. The notification read, "Office of the Election Authority, Chief Electoral Officer : Notifications dated 15th & 17th February issued for Phrase 1 and 2 respectively and the schedule issued on 13th February for other phases of Panchayat by-elections are hereby withdrawn." Political parties in meeting with the CEO expressed apprehensions of holding elections when the top leadership of two main parties in the Union Territory was behind bars. Junaid Mir of Jammu Kashmir Worker's Party told India Today TV, "While the deferment may suit some political outfits that are against the democracy, we at JKWP have nothing to gain from the deferment.
