Melbourne's weekly pro-Palestine rallies to turn monthly

After 70 weeks of demonstrations every Sunday, organisers of Melbourne's pro-Palestine rallies will wind back their efforts. Rally organiser Nasser Mashni said the organisation was planning "more strategic action" and "more effective rallies" once a month instead of every week. Rallies began in October 2023, just after Israel responded to a surprise Hamas attack in Israel in which more than 1,200 people were killed, and 250 people were taken hostage, according to Israeli authorities. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has since said the ceasefire with Hamas would be "terminated" if the militant group failed to release hostages. "It takes a lot of energy to put together a rally every week and it’s necessary to do so, but we feel that it would be better for us, for our movement, to get all of those people to come once a month," he said.
