A deep dive into the 49ers’ draft class, explained by top scout Adam Peters

If this year had been a normal draft cycle, the 49ers would have traveled to Columbia, S.C., for Javon Kinlaw’s pro day and also would have done a series of interviews in Ellisville, Miss., the home of Jones County Junior College where Kinlaw spent a year after high school. In a phone interview with The Athletic, Peters discussed Kinlaw and the team’s other first-round pick, receiver Brandon Aiyuk, and explained why West Virginia offensive lineman Colton McKivitz earned an elite “gold helmet” designation, how the team picked Charlie Woerner out of the group of tight ends and how the 49ers dealt with seventh-round pick Jauan Jennings’ two suspensions at Tennessee. “When you’re not on a good team you don’t usually win awards like that,” Peters said. “I met with every player of our team when I got here and I asked every one of them to a man: ‘Do we need Jauan Jennings on our team?’” Pruitt said. “And every one of ’em said, ‘Absolutely, coach.’” Peters said the 49ers needed to find out what the root of the problem was.
