Gleeman: Twins’ blind spot with Emilio Pagán may cost them a playoff spot

New York Times

Good relief pitchers go through bad stretches all the time, and in most cases it makes sense for teams to stick with them. Four months later, Pagán has been one of MLB’s worst relievers, posting a 5.23 ERA with 10 homers allowed in 41 innings. There’s also the belief, repeated regularly by both Baldelli and Pagán, that his struggles stem from one bad pitch within otherwise quality outings. Pagán has been one of MLB’s worst relievers this season, and over the past three seasons. Just as “one bad pitch” can wreck an otherwise good outing, this one bad — and increasingly inexplicable — decision may end up wrecking the Twins’ otherwise promising season.
