Sikh body puts its president's resignation on hold, urges him to reconsider

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, the apex body overseeing Sikh gurdwaras in India and abroad, has decided not to accept the resignation of its president, Harjinder Singh Dhami, and has urged him to reconsider his decision. His resignation came amid differences and public disagreements between him and Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh over the SGPC’s decision to remove Giani Harpreet Singh as the Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib. Referring to a recent Facebook post by Jathedar Raghbir Singh criticising the removal of Giani Harpreet Singh, Dhami said the decision was "highly condemnable" and "unfortunate". Meanwhile, Virk clarified that SGPC Act 125 empowers the apex Sikh body executive committee to appoint or remove any official, including Jathedars of the Akal Takht. On February 10, the SGPC had dismissed Giani Harpreet Singh as the Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib in Bathinda following an executive committee meeting.
