India faced highest number of tuberculosis cases in 2024
Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel said that in 2023 and 2024, India reported 25.5 lakh and 26.07 lakh tuberculosis cases, marking highest number of notified cases ever. Tuberculosis treatment coverage increased from 53% in 2015 to 85% in 2023, Patel revealed as she inaugurated the India Innovation Summit Pioneering Solutions to End TB at Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre on Tuesday. The government has introduced several new initiatives and treatments to improve TB care: Improved drug-resistant TB treatment: A shorter and safer oral drug regimen with Bedaquiline has raised treatment success rates from 68% in 2020 to 75% in 2022. The Indian Council of Medical Research, India's medical panel, has introduced several innovations to improve TB detection and diagnosis: Handheld X-ray devices: These portable devices enable TB screening in remote areas with low radiation exposure. PathoDetectTM NAAT test: This new molecular test can detect TB and drug resistance simultaneously, making diagnosis faster and more efficient.
